Dear Parents, after any dental treatment, your child will require special care and attention over the next few days. Please follow the instructions mentioned below:
Post operative (after treatment) instructions
Fillings
- Child can drink normal water after the filling.
- Child can eat after half an hour. Do not chew hard food.
- Avoid extreme temperature diet (too cold or too hot) for 24 hours.
- If any sensitivity to cold and heat, as well as any soreness, should go away in few days.
- Normal brushing has to be done, even on the fillings, every day.
- If we have used dental anesthesia during the procedure, avoid chewing until the numbness has completely worn off.
Root canal treatment
- Child can drink normal water after the treatment.
- If dental anesthesia is not used during procedure, the child can eat normally after half an hour. But, if anesthesia is used, avoid chewing until the numbness has completely worn off.
- Special care after dental anesthesia
- Numbness: The dental anesthesia effect will be there for approximately three hours. During this period, child should be watched carefully for the following:
- Do not bite, scratch, pinch or injure the cheek, lips, or tongue. It will damage soft skin and result in pain and ulcer.
- Do not speak for 3-4 hrs
- Do not eat any chewable things for 3-4 hrs (till numbness goes off). Child can take only liquid.
- Do not stretch the lips or cheeks to look at the area.
- After 3-4 hrs: By this time numbness will wear off. Child can have normal food with room temperature.
- For 24 hrs:
- Do not chew hard food on the filling area
- Avoid sticky food and chewing gum
- If we have placed a temporary filling, it may come out slightly while eating or brushing. Not to worry.
- If any sensitivity to cold and heat, as well as any soreness, should go away in few days.
- Brush normally
Cap for tooth (Crown)
- Child can drink normal water immediately after treatment.
- Slight discomfort will be there for few days. Child will feel as if something is holding the tooth tight or something is stuck in between teeth. It is just because of pressure of the cap.
- It’s common for the child to touch the crown with tongue or with opposite teeth for initial few days.
- Not to touch the crown with finger.
- If we have used dental anesthesia during the procedure, avoid chewing until the numbness has completely worn off.

Tooth removal (Extraction)
- Upto 30 min after tooth removal
- Let the child bite on the cotton pack with firm pressure for 30-45 minutes. During this time, child should swallow the saliva and not to spit anything.
- After 30 min:
- Dos:
- After 30-45 min, take out the cotton.
- Now, The child may eat plain ice cream, drink liquids like water or juice (non-carbonated) with a glass, and should NOT use a straw.
- Give your child prescribed medicine before the numbness wears off.
- Don’ts
- Numbness: The dental anesthesia effect will be there for approximately three hours. Child should be watched carefully during these three hours. Follow these Don’ts properly:
- Don’t bite, scratch, pinch or injure the cheek, lips, or tongue. It will damage soft skin and result in pain and ulcer.
- Don’t speak for 3-4 hrs
- Don’t eat any chewable things for 3-4 hrs (till numbness goes off)
- Don’t take hot food and beverages for 24 hrs.
- Don’t rinse your mouth.
- Don’t use a straw.
- Don’t spit.
- Don’t drink carbonated beverages.
- Don’t stretch the lips or cheeks to look at the area.
- Don’t touch the area with fingers or other objects.
- After 3-4 hrs:
- By this time numbness will wear off. Child can have soft food with room temperature/cold.
- Do not take hot food
- Do not eat hard and crispy food such as nuts, chips and popcorn that may get lodged in the surgical areas.
- After 24 hrs:
- Child may rinse with normal water after meals.
- DO NOT brush on the extraction site. Other teeth may be brushed carefully.
- As per the child’s comfort, hard food can be given.
Fluoride gel treatment
- Let the fluoride gel remain in the mouth, undisturbed, for a longer time
- After 1 hour:
- Child can rinse the mouth
- Child can drink normal water
- After 2 hours:
- Child can have normal food
- For 24 hours:
- Avoid milk.
- Avoid citrous fruits or juices or carbonated beverages.
- Avoid sticky food or chewing gum
